5 Things To Remember When You're Filled With Self-Doubt

Have you ever taken yourself out of the running for an opportunity just to see it go to someone else who wasn’t even close to being qualified?

I have. It stings.

It turns into an ongoing cycle of you doubting yourself, so you take yourself out of the running for an opportunity. Which just then proves to you, that you didn’t deserve that opportunity, to begin with.

While people are out here, taking every shot imaginable.

1. Everyone Fakes It Sometimes

Fake it until you make it — and all that jazz.

Even the most confident people out there have moments where they are faking it. Inside they feel insecure but they know they have to keep up appearances on the outside.

It’s not that it's coming from an unauthentic place, they just know that the feelings and motivation will follow. They know deep down they have what it takes and aren’t going to let moments of self-doubt hold them back.

There are entire Ted Talks and courses designed to teach you how to fake confidence until you start to believe it.

So next time you see someone who seems to never question themselves, and you think why can’t I be like that. Remember, there was a time they had no idea what they were doing but did it anyway.

2. It’s All In Your Head

It’s important to understand that your thoughts are just that, thoughts. They have as much value as you choose to give them.

If you choose to believe in yourself or what you have to offer nothing would change except your perspective. You would be equally as prepared.

It's all about self-confidence.

There are people out in the world believing so intensely in themselves that they end up being president without any qualifiable skills to back it up.

Although this is more delusion than self-confidence.

The only thing holding you back from trying is yourself.

3. Doubting Yourself Is Good Sometimes

It makes you a humble human being. With self-awareness comes self-doubt.

When in doubt we question our own abilities and decisions. In small doses, this makes us better, and we can use this to our advantage.

If you always overestimate your abilities and your right to be in a situation, there’s going to come a time where you fall flat on your face. It's better to be over-prepared than underprepared.

We all make mistakes, and it’s important to understand that you could be wrong. This allows us to see other people's perspectives. It is also a driving force for growth, if we felt like we were always right there would be no reason for us to learn.

4. You’re Not Alone

The thing with self-doubt is that it feels isolating, you think that you are the only one who is experiencing insecurity. The truth is everyone doubts their abilities sometimes.

Even the most successful people have bouts of self-doubt. Almost 70% of the population have experienced signs of imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome: a belief that you are not as competent as others believe you to be.

I can receive 50 compliments on a skill that I have and there will still be a small part of me that sits there and thinks it’s not true. It’s completely normal.

5. Self-Doubt Isn’t A Life Sentence

What you have is a confidence issue. Confidence can be built whether it's from practice or building up your self-worth.

It's not something you have to deal with forever, you need to look deep inside and figure out why you feel this way.

Simple Ways To Combat Your Self-Doubt When It Happens

Remind Yourself Of Your Successes.

Look at all the times you were successful in the past. Look at times you persevered when things didn’t go your way.

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves how resilient we can be.

Mental Practice

The act of thinking about being successful at a task has a similar effect on your brain as actually being successful at that task in the past.

When facing a stressful event, such as going into a job interview. Doing a mental practice that you’ve gone through it successfully in the past will boost your confidence.

Question It:

Whenever you have feelings of insecurity or feel yourself losing control. Question it.

Instead of asking yourself all the reasons why you are not capable, ask yourself all the reasons you are.
